James Fowler, one of the original township settlers,
deeded the 4 acres to the Westfield Township Trustees in 1846. The
one deed restriction is the land cannot be sold or transferred unless
the township is dissolved.
Since the location was in the center of the township,
the locals established a store/trading post, post office, school,
and places of worship around the deeded park. The four (4) acres
was left wooded to let horses rest and graze while residents shopped,
traded or worshipped. At one point there was a fenced area and of
course hitching posts along the perimeter. Now a large portion of
the deeded area is roadway.
In the late 1990's a Park Committee was formed with
1 township trustee, 1 township resident, 1 Westfield Center Council
person, 1 Westfield Center resident. This committee decides the
maintenance, landscape design, and the planting of new trees. The
cost of maintaining and planting is shared 50-50 between the township
and the village.
In 2001 Westfield Township constructed the gazebo
that is presently in the center of the park.
